Reviews: Mozart

MOZART: Serenade No. 10 in B-Flat Major, K. 361. Chamber Ensemble conducted by Marcel Moyse. MARLBORO RECORDING SOCIETY (available from Marlboro Recording Society, 5114 Wissioming Rd., Washington, D. C. 20016), $7.50.

This is a recording of a live performance, complete with applause at the end of the second side. All competent professionals, the performers use modern instruments and produce a smooth ensemble sound of a character not particularly different from most of the other available recordings. Perhaps the most exciting passages in this performance are the bassoon solos, and if you prefer modern instruments competently played, this is a good recording. However, the Harmonia Mundi version (BASF KHB 21414) provides a musical experience of sharper profile through the greater brilliance of 18th century wind instruments.
