Reviews: Sullivan-Duthoit
SULLIVAN-DUTHOIT: Pineapple Poll
Suite. ROSSINI-RESPIGHI-GODFREY: La Boutique fantasque. GOUNOD-WINTERBOTTOM:
Faust: Ballet Music. Eastman Wind Ensemble conducted by Frederick Fennell. MERCURY SRI 75138, $8.98.
In its day, Fred Fennell's EWE was one of the wonders of our professional music education system. (It is still an admirable organization, but the pride and spirit of Eastman's wind élite in its formative years were wonderfully communicated on records.) So welcome back, former Mercury SR 90256. But unless you are a great wind-band enthusiast, you may find these excellent arrangements disturbing, for not only are the three compositions extremely well-known in their orchestral garb but also mighty convincing in it.
