Born: December 7, 1887, Vienna, Austria
Died: October 1, 1964, Santa Monica, California, USA

Ernst Toch's Spiel is another of the early 20th-century works for band that is finally getting the attention it deserves on recordings. Among the three currently available, the Corporon performance is my clear favorite. Corporon's pacing is splendid, and the drier acoustic of this recording suits the music well. Carmichael's performance is part of a CD that brings together all of the band commissions from the 1926 Donaueschingen Music Festival. He accentuates the tempo differences between movements, while Reynish minimizes them. It is great to see classic band works receiving this type of variety of interpretation!
