The golden age of Sousa marches on CD may be upon us! We now have a CD set of
all the recordings made by the Sousa Band (usually, but not always, without
Sousa). We have the Detroit Concert Band's set of all 116 published marches
available on 5 CDs. We have a series of CDs from the US Marine Band, the band Sousa left to
start his own group, who probably play more Sousa in a year than nearly anyone else
plays in a lifetime. We have all of Fennell's Sousa recordings with Eastman on
CD. And we have worthy interpretations from Keith Brion, Donald Hunsberger, and many other conductors and bands.

This series of Sousa scores edited by Keith Brion and Loras Schissel is
remarkable. Sousa performed his marches very differently in indoor performances
than what was published in the scores. Some attribute that to Sousa wanting to
keep ahead of the competition, others to the difference between Sousa's indoor
concert performances vs. a publication oriented to marching bands. In any
event, anyone who has listened to or performed in a band conducted by someone skilled in the
Sousa style knows the great difference these changes to the published music can
make. Brion and Schissel are making great strides in committing this oral
tradition to print.
