Born: September 28, 1870, Blāmont, France
Died: August 17, 1958, Neuilly-sur-Seine, France

With all these recordings, it looks like Dionysiaques is at long last taking its rightful place as a classic of the concert band literature. There's nothing else quite like this 1913 tone poem. Aadland's recording is the best I've yet heard. He and his Norwegian band capture the contrasts between voluptuous langour and weighty energy that elude many an ensemble. The Corporon and Reynish recordings do have great technical polish and present spirited interpretive viewpoints. All three are part of excellent CD programs of original wind music. Lied et Scherzo, Schmitt's work for horn solo and wind nonet, is also now available in a CD devoted to his wind-oriented chamber music.
