Edwin Franko Goldman

Overview - Recordings - Scores - Books - Links

Born: January 1, 1878, Louisville, Kentucky, USA
Died: February 21, 1956, New York, New York, USA

Edwin Franko Goldman was one of the driving forces behind developing the concert band as a serious means for musical expression. It was he who started commissioning composers such as Ottorino Respighi, Albert Roussel, Virgil Thomson, Paul Creston, and Morton Gould to write for the Goldman Band. But Goldman was also a top-quality march composer, leaning more towards concert marches vs. the parade or circus. Fennell's March Time LP (now coupled with Screamers on CD) showcased 6 of Goldman's marches. Other CDs bring the total up to twelve marches and one virtuoso showpiece--not as much as we should have, but enough to show the quality of Goldman's compositions.
