Vittorio GianniniOverview - Recordings - Scores - Books - Links
Vittorio Giannini's five published works for band were a major addition to the band repertoire in the 50s and 60s. The Symphony No. 3 is a tuneful, memorable delight, a true classic in the repertoire. The two recordings are both good but my preference goes to Fennell's version. The Eastman CD contains marvelous symphonies by Gould and Hovhaness to complement the Giannini, and the Dallas program is very fine as well. Someday, maybe the other works for band will finally get a commercial CD recording. Certainly all five works should be able to fit on one conveniently programmed disc. As you will see in his reviews, Variations and Fugue is at the top of Walter Simmons's want list for band recordings. There's good reason for this: it is a marvelous, intricate work, unique in the band literature. I share Simmons's view that this is Giannini's finest work for band, and look forward to the day it becomes available on CD. Recordings
