Born: November 14, 1900, Brooklyn, New York, USA
Died: December 2, 1990, Peekskill, New York, USA

Aaron Copland's music is perhaps as popular as ever. With the year 2000 marking the centennial of his birth, there are lots of performances and recordings going on, and his orchestral music is once again in the classical best-seller charts. His one original work for band, Emblems, is one of the last works he composed. It is one of his craggier works and has never quite achieved the popularity the composer desired for it, but it is still a milestone in the band literature. Copland also transcribed his orchestral An Outdoor Overture for band, and set a section of Appalachian Spring as Variations on a Shaker Melody.

It is great to see Frank Battisti's new recording joining those of Eugene Corporon. Corporon's recordings are very good, but certainly this is music that can benefit from a variety of interpretations!
