Henry Brant

Overview - Recordings - Scores - Books - Links

Born: September 15, 1913, Montréal, Québec, Canada

Henry Brant's music often uses widely separated spatial ensembles. He creates a type of extended counterpoint or juxtaposition of musics that really needs the spatial separation to come across most effectively. Naturally, this makes his music difficult to record effectively given stereo technology. But with the surround-sound options now available with DVD-Audio, perhaps Brant's time on recordings will finally come.

Fortunately we do have one of his wind ensemble works available on a commercial recording. Verticals Ascending is for two wind groups, so one group goes in each stereo channel. It is included on a fine CD of diverse band and wind ensemble music.
